Frequently asked questions
What is a gaussian splat?
A gaussian splat is a photorealistic 3D scene built from millions of tiny coloured 'blobs' (3D gaussians) trained from photos or video of a real place or object. Unlike a traditional 3D model, it keeps photographic detail — reflections, soft edges, real lighting — and renders in real time in a browser, game engine, or VR headset.
What file formats do splats come in?
The standard source format is .ply (full quality, large). Compressed formats — .spz and .sog — cut file sizes by 10–20x for web and mobile delivery. SplatMart listings include the source file plus auto-generated compressed versions where available.
How do I view a gaussian splat?
Every SplatMart listing has an interactive 3D preview right in the browser. After download, you can use free viewers and editors like SuperSplat, engine plugins for Unity and Unreal, or web libraries like PlayCanvas and Spark for Three.js.
Can I sell my own splats on SplatMart?
Yes — anyone can sell. Upload your .ply or .spz capture, set a price (or list it free), and SplatMart generates compressed formats, previews and a product page. Sellers keep 90% of every sale, paid out via Stripe.
Who owns the splats I upload or buy?
Creators keep full ownership of everything they upload — listing on SplatMart never transfers your rights to us. Buyers receive a clear usage licence shown on each listing before purchase.
Are there free gaussian splats?
Yes — sellers can list splats for free, and the Browse page has a free-only filter. Free downloads are a great way to test a seller's quality or your pipeline before buying larger scenes.
